Sharpsburg Market Garden

Sharpsburg Market Garden

The Sharpsburg Market Garden is located on the site of an old abandoned bar and owned by Sharpsburg Borough who supplies the water through an irrigation system donated by Deep Local, an engineering start-up company. Additional start-up materials and supplies were acquired through Grow Pittsburgh. This garden is staffed by just six volunteers who tend the 20 raised beds planted with a variety of vegetables. One hundred percent of the produce grown goes to local community residents. Every Friday during the growing season the produce is given away at the garden, Sharpsburg Library, and Second Harvest. The garden perimeter is planted with a lovely variety of pollinator plants donated by People’s Gas. A wonderful sturdy planting table was built by a local boy scout and sits beside a shed where tools are stored for volunteers to use. The shed is decorated with large dragon flies made from old ceiling-fan blades. It’s a whimsical example of reuse and creativity.

In 2024-25, our FCGC gifted monies toward the purchase of compost for this garden.
