Trillium Trail

trilliumIn 1946 Ruth Boyles, a FCGC member, and her husband purchased property along Hemlock Hollow Road with the purpose of preserving it for its natural abundance of trillium.  This enabled Fox Chapel Borough to create the Trillium Trail in 1948.  For this project the FCGC received the highest award given by the National Council of State Garden Clubs, the Green Ribbon Conservation Award.

Fox Chapel Garden Club has offered long-standing support for the green spaces in our community.  The Trillium Trail, with its diversity of eastern native wildflowers, is one of the finest examples of Pennsylvania Mesic Forest in our region.  Additionally, our members were visionary in promoting the environmental educational use of the Trillium Trail.  Spring walks of the trails were incorporated into the Fox Chapel Area School District's curriculum and were conducted by Club members, well before such activities were common.

We continue to support the Trillium Trail by assisting in the selection, purchase and installation of native plantings in areas where disruption of the habitat has occurred due to natural and man-made events.
